[1356 – 1404]
Pope Boniface IX, born Pietro Tomicelli, was Pontiff from 1389, contemporaneously with the Avignon antipopes Clement VII and Benedict XIII. He refused to abdicate, leading not only to a continuation of the Western Schism, but also to an ever-deepening rift in the Church. However, it also meant that Boniface had a growing influence on some important aspects of secular power.
